Lake Alfred at a glance
Lake Alfred is a Polk County city of 6,374 people (2020 census). Of its 8.6 square miles, 3.7 are water, and it sits in the Central Florida Highlands between Lakeland and Haines City.
What that means for your plumbing
Lakefront living means irrigation pumps, long outdoor lines and soil that stays damp near the shore. Septic systems near water need care, and backflow devices on irrigation should be tested so lake water can't siphon back into your drinking water. See fixtures and outdoor plumbing.
Citrus country
Lake Alfred has been tied to citrus for over a century. Groves and older packing-era homes often have outbuildings, outdoor taps and long buried lines, any of which can leak quietly. A water bill that creeps up is worth investigating.
Fargo, Chubb and Bartow Junction
The town grew after the South Florida Railroad arrived in 1883 and went through several names. Snowbirds from Fargo, North Dakota named it after home until the post office objected to mix-ups with Largo; it then became Chubb and later Bartow Junction. The name Lake Alfred was adopted in 1913. In 1917 the state opened the University of Florida's first off-campus center here, the Citrus Experiment Station, now the UF/IFAS Citrus Research and Education Center. Homes from those early decades are among the oldest in the area; old cast-iron drains crack with age, so see sewer lines if drains back up.
