Highland City at a glance
Highland City is a census-designated place with 12,355 people (2020 census), between Lakeland and Bartow along US 98. It is part of the Lakeland–Winter Haven metro area.
What that means for your plumbing
As an unincorporated community, Highland City has a mix of homes on county water and homes with wells, and many neighborhoods use septic. Slow drains, gurgling and soggy spots in the yard can point to a septic issue rather than a pipe clog; see sewer and septic lines.
The name people get wrong
Locals point out that the name is Highland City, without an S. If you're filling in a permit, a warranty form or a request, using the right name avoids mix-ups with Lakeland Highlands next door.
Fort Fraser and the Haskell depot
The US Army built Fort Fraser here in 1837 during the war with the Seminole, and Zachary Taylor commanded it briefly. In 1885 the railroad between Lakeland and Bartow put a single stop here, named Haskell after two early investors, and the freight depot stood beside what became US 98 until 1958. The community was incorporated as Highlands City in 1925, but a lawsuit by landowners ended that by 1927. Homes from the boom years after the Lakeland Highlands development of the 1920s sit beside much newer ones, so ask a plumber about the age of your pipes before a remodel.
