Auburndale at a glance
Auburndale is a city of 15,616 people (2020 census) on the east side of Lakeland, inside the Lakeland–Winter Haven metro area. Of its 9.3 square miles, more than four are water, and the land around the lakes is flat with gently rolling hills.
What that means for your plumbing
With almost half the city under water, many homes sit close to a lake and a high water table. Septic systems and drain lines near the water have less room to drain, so slow drains after heavy rain are worth a closer look. If the meter moves with everything off, read about slab leak detection.
Lakefront homes
Homes on the water often run irrigation pumps from the lake and may have long service lines from the street. Check outdoor lines and backflow devices each spring, and know where the main shut-off is before you need it.
From Sanatoria to Auburndale
Frank Fuller founded the settlement in 1880 while escaping cold northern winters, and it was first called Sanatoria after a local hotel. When the railroad arrived in the 1880s, settlers from Auburndale, Massachusetts suggested the new name, which traces back to a line in Oliver Goldsmith's poem The Deserted Village. Early on, the town also drew a number of well-known American artists. Many older houses near the historic center date from the first decades of growth, and older homes are where galvanized pipe and cast-iron drains are most likely to remain; see repiping.
